Como Mangold describe a este héroe veterano, "Dan Evans es un hombre obligado a vivir con unos impedimentos, con su cojera. Esto hizo interesante la hora del cásting y vimos que Christian lo tenía (al personaje). Christian tenía esa clase de intensidad e integridad que se veía en sus ojos. Pensaba que para hacer realidad la nobleza de ese personaje, necesitábamos alguien con quién identificarle."

As Mangold describes the reluctant hero, "Dan Evans is a man who is living life tied back, limping along trying to deal with the obstacles getting thrown at him. That made it interesting to cast someone with the kind of strength that Christian has. Christian has a kind of intensity and integrity that leaps out of his eyes. I think it makes for a really noble character, someone who you identify with."
Bale se mostró impaciente con el personaje. "A mi me gusta leer muchos guiones, pero muy pocos realmente te impactan. Y ésta lo hizo. Era una gran historia y un clásico cuento sobre la moral, como realmente son muchos western." Él se mostró intrigado acerca de la dinámica entre Evans y Wade, quienes forjan una profunda amistad durante esos 3 días juntos. "Existe una gran lucha de poder (de voluntades) entre ambos, y un choque entre sus filosofías de vida; pero existe un entendimiento tácito y un acuerdo sobre lo que es la sociedad. Pero están totalmente en desacuerdo al enfocar cómo enfrentarse a la sociedad."

Bale eagerly took on the role. "I like to read a lot of scripts, but very rarely does one really stick with you. And this one did. It was a great story and a classic morality tale, as most westerns really are." He was intrigued by the dynamic between Evans and Wade, who forge a singular friendship during their three-day journey. "There's a great battle of wills between the two, and a clash of philosophies; but there is an understanding and agreement about what society is. But they have absolute opposite approaches about how to deal with that society."

Emmy , la camarera con la que Ben Wade se acuesta y a la que propone marchar a otro pueblo, a vivir honradamente le dice: Emmy: No one forgets Velvet. (Nadie olvida Velvet) . (A los seguidores de Bale nos puede sonar curioso, pues recordamos una película de Todd Haynes , en la que Christian Bale interpretaba a Arthur, era Velvet Goldmine en 1998).
